Ben has been a carpenter for more than 10 years now, and has always had an interest of understanding the whole process. This has meant questioning standard construction systems, particularly in relation to environmental impact. This has led to extensive study into traditional building methods. These are less polluting and actually more likely to last the centuries so long as proper maintenance is carried out as they don’t rely on factory manufactured products.
Over the last few years he has completed courses in natural building & straw bale construction, traditional timber frame Joinery in the UK, and independent research into Tadelakt plastering in The Gambia. As a result Ben now covers a wide spectrum of traditional building techniques using natural materials that are unfortunately underutilised these days, despite the fact that they can offer longevity, integrity and delight.
Ben pairs this enthusiasm for natural materials and traditional hand-craftsmanship with a passion for science and learning in the form of WUFI analysis and materials testing, giving weight to the traditional theories of natural building.
Ben’s buildings are not bargain basement; there are plenty of companies offering that. What he can offer is hand-crafted, meticulously detailed buildings that are backed with knowledge of the science behind the practice.
